Other Driver in Hulk Hogan Car Crash Sentenced

The driver, who witnesses say was racing Nick Hogan when Nicks car crashed and left a man severely injured, was sentenced in Florida today.

Nick Bollea (Hogan), was driving his yellow Toyota Supra when he lost control on slick roads and hit a palm tree. The passenger, John Graziano a good friend of Hogan’s, was seriously injured in the crash and is still in a coma, and is suffering from permanent brain damage.

Daniel Jacobs (22 yrs old) was driving a silver Dodge Viper owned by Nick’s father Hulk Hogan on August 26 in Clearwater, Fla. Jacobs admitted he was driving the Viper, but did not plead to racing.

A judge sentenced Jacobs to 90 days probation and 25 hours of community service. He also lost his license for 90 days and was given a $500 fine.

Hogan is scheduled to be in court on April 14.

Leonardo DiCaprio running red lights in NYC ?

Leonardo DiCaprio departed yesterday in NYC, but only after cops searched the car he was riding in.

NYPD can clearly been seen rummaging through the white Mercedes as Leo sat shotgun on Fifth Ave. Only the driver — not Leo or his back seat passenger — was ordered out of the car after he was pulled over for running a red light. The plain-clothed cops (with NYPD windbreakers — not exactly on the DL) let Leo and his pal leave after about 20 minutes.

Mischa Barton Charged With DUI, Pot Possession

The L.A. District Attorney is charging Mischa Barton with four misdemeanor counts:

1. Driving under the influence

2. Driving with a blood alcohol level of .08%

3. Driving without a license

4. Possession of marijuana (under an ounce)

These charges all relate to her December 27 arrest. The former “O.C.” star was pulled over in West Hollywood, CA last year.

Cops said she “was seen straddling two lanes of traffic and failed to signal when making a turn.” When deputies pulled her over, they determined that she “was an unlicensed driver and was driving while under the influence of an alcoholic beverage.” The next court date for her is February 28.

Tech spinoff targets traffic scofflaws

Enforcing vehicle laws means opportunities for Lanham company by Kevin J. Shay | Staff Writer Christopher Anderson⁄The Gazette

‘‘Optotraffic was started in response to our looking for spinoffs to the commercial markets,” said J. Marcos Sirota, president and CEO of Sigma Space. Optotraffic’s technology is used to enforce traffic laws.

Some Maryland companies are getting a boost from a growing law enforcement trend: using cameras to catch speeders and red-light runners. Among those is Optotraffic, a subsidiary of aerospace engineering company Sigma Space Corp. of Lanham. Optotraffic is involved in all phases of the process — design, development, installation, monitoring, violation processing and public education support.

The company has conducted numerous traffic studies employing the technology in Maryland, including in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, concluding what may be obvious to many drivers: Very few people drive the speed limit. Optotraffic has a contract for red-light enforcement cameras in Edmonston and is negotiating with two other suburban Maryland cities, said J. Marcos Sirota, president and CEO of Sigma Space.

In addition, the company recently obtained a patent for a compact system that uses laser radiation in the form of optical pulses to determine vehicles’ speeds. The new system, which operates with a sensor, can monitor vehicles in several lanes and record only those that actually travel a fixed speed above the limit, Sirota said. He co-founded Sigma about a decade ago, and has seen it grow from a handful of employees to about 100 now. Revenues grew about 58 percent, to $12.5 million, from 2006 to 2007. The Optotraffic subsidiary formed a few years ago.

‘‘We are using [the new system] already onred-light enforcement and tested it significantly on speed enforcement,” Sirota said. ‘‘Our state-of-the-art detection systems, coupled with high-resolution photo and video systems, ensure the highest exposure and prosecutable rates.”

While the use of enforcement cameras is growing, the increase is not as fast as some would like, said Jonathan Adkins, a spokesman for the Governors Highway Safety Association in Washington, D.C. Many more jurisdictions across the nation use red-light cameras than speed cameras — about 300 to 35, he said.

Red-light cameras have been used in Maryland for years, while Montgomery County became the first jurisdiction in the state to employ speed systems last year. The county recently awarded a contract worth up to $19 million to install and maintain 24 speed-enforcement cameras to Affiliated Computer Services, a Dallas information technology company.

Nick Hogan to Appear in Court 2/19/08 for Car Crash

By Gina Serpe E! News

Florida police have finally put the brakes on Nick Hogan.

The 17-year-old Hogan Knows Best star, who appeared on the reality show with his wrestling superstar father, Hulk Hogan, has been arrested on several criminal charges, including third-degree felony reckless driving involving serious bodily injury, stemming from an August car crash that left his passenger in critical condition.

Police also cited the younger Hogan, whose real name is Nick Bollea, for use of a motor vehicle in commission of a felony, being under the age of 21 and operating a vehicle with a breath-alcohol level of 0.02 percent or higher and illegal window tint.

Hogan turned himself in to authorities at 9:48 a.m. Wednesday, hours after police in Clearwater issued a warrant for his arrest upon the completion of an “extensive investigation” into the wreck by a team of four officers. He was booked on the charges at the Pinellas County Jail and later released on $10,000 bail.

Daniel Jacobs, the 22-year-old driver of a second car, which investigators have concluded was racing Hogan’s at the time of the crash, is also being issued a summons to appear in court for reckless driving.

“Nick and the entire ‘Hogan’ Bollea family are saddened that criminal charges have been filed in regards to the tragic single car accident on August 26, 2007,” the family said in a statement. “Nick will meet and answer these charges in the appropriate arena—a court of law.”

Despite being a minor at the time of the accident, Hogan will be tried on the charge as an adult. Hogan’s passenger, 22-year-old John Graziano, a Marine who had just completed a tour of duty in Iraq, remains hospitalized, reportedly in a coma. Graziano, who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, may have also suffered brain damage caused by swelling of his brain.
